When fed a prompt that includes adequate information about the job description and your own skills and experience, ChatGPT will provide a rather long response that includes options for a cover letter, a resume summary statement, and bullet points that describe work history and relevant skills. This can be great, but it’s important that you carefully review ChatGPT’s response because it might contain certain embellishments that could be misleading. For example, ChatGPT’s response included the following statement in the cover letter example:

The example prompt made no mention of taking the initiative to streamline the product development process, so in this case an applicant can either keep the statement if they have examples to back up the claim, or they can omit this sentence from their cover letter. The point is, ChatGPT likes to say things that make you sound great, but without adequate information it may provide false information that could wind up getting you into trouble later on. The same philosophy applies to the resume summary statement and bullet points that ChatGPT provides in its response. It’s entirely possible that you forgot to include certain information in your prompt and ChatGPT accidentally covered for you with its embellishments, so if this is the case you’re in the clear. You never want to be dishonest or outright lie about your skills and experience on your resume or any other part of your job application, as it will come back to haunt you in the future.

AI programs like ChatGPT can be helpful tools in your job search, but they’re not the be-all and end-all. ChatGPT is best used to provide draft materials for you to work off of, since it will often add unnecessary information or details that may not be true to your own skills and experience.
